David was in Melbourne on the weekend so he could attend the DDD Melbourne 2026 conference. Not only was it good, but he's written up his notes from the sessions he attended too.

On Saturday I attended DDD Melbourne 2026. It was great to be back again in Melbourne and attending a DDD conference (instead of organising one!). I got to catch up with some old friends, meet some people for the first time in person and hear some great talks.

SixPivot supported my travel and attendance, which was really appreciated. I also got to catch up with some of my colleagues, some at the conference and another later on Sunday.

I almost missed the start - turns out the curtains in my hotel room were extra effective at blocking out the light. I'd gone back to sleep a few times, figuring it was still too early and then finally I figured I better check what time it actually was, and it was just after 8am! A mad scramble to get showered and dressed and race out the door. Quickly grabbed breakfast from McDonald's and then just made it through registration and grabbed a seat for the start. Just as well my hotel was right around the corner from the conference.

The organising team did a fantastic job this year. The food was good and there was plenty of it - I'd learned from last year that there was no need to queue - they wouldn't run out!

I made handwritten notes for each talk I attended. I've transcribed them here as a more legible record. Even I struggle to read my handwriting, so better to attempt that now rather than later! The notes made sense to me at the time, but whether that's true post event is another question 😃

AI: it's our responsibility - Sreyna Rath

Sreyna gave the keynote presentation.

AI is like a villain developer. A "brilliant jerk" - no values or empathy. No awareness of damage.

Examples

Gender bias baked in, racial bias

Amazon hiring

US Healthcare - used highest cost as proxy for health needs. Black people excluded more often

AI is a mirror

Data reflects us

Brilliant jerk culture

Scale

AI family tree

Dark side of the Internet

Microsoft Tay

Character.AI - suicide

Jaimee - built for women https://jaimee.ai/

How do we fix that?

Compassionate design

Design for most vulnerable

Who is most vulnerable?

What's the worst thing feature?

How do we prevent that harm?

Ask right questions

Persona testing

Test as different race, gender, age, abilities

Different to you!

AI reviewing AI

First AI optimised to be helpful

Second AI reviews the first - optimised for safety

Eg. Is output sexualised when not requested?

Your "Jedi" toolkit - what kind of Jedi will you be?

AI doesn't have values, it has patterns

The good news: the villain can be reformed

Jerk => Jedi

"May the framework be with you"

Code is a Conversation: What Are You Really Saying to the Next Developer? - Joel Gallagher

\

Code is read more often than written

Cognitive load

eg. contrast "The DaVinci Code" (simple, short sentences) vs "A brief history of time" (did anyone ever finish or understand it)

Naming, structure, comments, commits

Classes and variables = noun

Functions = verb + noun

Watch out for reserved words

Function size and scope

Refactor and extract methods

Reduce depth/complexity

Comments

Explain the why, not how

Don't comment out code

Commits

Name, scope, flow, consistency

Tools

Consistent standards

Enforce standards

Recommended reading

Clean code

Pragmatic Programmer (latest edition)

Make your code more "DaVinci"

Managing for Failure - Amy Norris

Failure is good

Website hacked

Practice recovery

What does failure mean?

"An emotionally upsetting learning experience"

Why do you want failure?

Hidden risks of "perfect" teams

Slow to learn, or averse

Feel more comfortable failing. What are you bad at

Example

Rocket game with faulty controller handle

Rubber ducking

Dig deep

How to encourage teams to be more comfortable with failure

Share personal failures

Fire drills

What not to do

Punish behaviours you don't want to see

Love your cool

Push people too hard

How to keep your boss happy

Less downtime

Problems solved faster

More cohesive team

Alternatively - do whatever you want until someone yells at you!

Low risk

Board games (make sure they understand it isn't a test)

Internal projects

Remember people don't know how to fail

Helpful rule:

THIRTY (minutes of no progress)

FIFTEEN (minutes to do something else)

FAIL (get fresh eyes)

Set failure as the goal. eg. "Get rejected by 10 conferences"

Over communicate

Positive feedback

Negative feedback

Expectations

Changes to plans (including why)

Questions

Overt positivity

"Good job me" (without irony)

Remember you're a trash can, not a trash can't

You Aren't Always Right: Resolving Technical Disagreements The Easy Way - Max Downey Twiss

Why is it important to resolve them?

How to we resolve them?

Reduce scope of disagreement

Compare reasoning

Bring in another perspective

Change the circumstances

Realise you are wrong!

Techniques

PR examples

The Billion Dollar Blindspot: What happens when everyone thinks alike - Amanda Pitcher

Systems thinker vs spacial specialist

DEIB - Diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging

Just having policy may not equate to true diversity

4 dimensions of diversity

demographic (often covered by compliance/policy)

cognitive

functional

behavioural

Boeing 737 MAX

GroupThink

Confirmation bias risks

Just because everyone agrees doesn't mean they are correct

Diversity sweet spot

What can we do?

Build psychological safety deliberately

Set the stage

Invite participation

Respond productively - react constructively

Practical tools

Activity to address GroupThink

Silent start - 5 mins quiet time to let people capture thoughts

Non-confrontational assent - dot voting / secret ballot

Separate generation from evaluation

Team leader - be a puppet and represent quiet voices

Time pressure kills

Balance productivity and quality

"Yes, and.." instead of "No, but.."

Hey LEGO robot, Grab me a Coke! - Daniel Fang

Daniel was the locknote speaker for the conference. I remember meeting Daniel when he spoke at DDD Brisbane

Lots of agents to make a Lego robot grab and move a can of coke.

That's a wrap

What a great team! Thanks again Bron and everyone.

Sunday morning I grabbed some breakfast at a cute little cafe (Segovia) in an alleyway not far from where I'd been staying. Then I walked to the train station to head out to friends' church in the suburbs. It's a completely different style of worship to my own church, but that's half the fun. Went out to lunch with them and it was great catching up.

Thushan very kindly offered to pick me up and drive me to the airport, which also gave us a chance to chat along the way.

Flight was a little delayed leaving, but it was good to get home Sunday evening. What a great weekend!

DDD Adelaide is a community-focused software development conference held annually in Adelaide, South Australia.
How did this year's event go? Pretty well I think!

Yesterday we ran DDD Adelaide 2025 - a community-driven conference for everyone involved in software development and related activities in Adelaide.

With an ever so slightly bigger attendance than last year, our venue again was the University of Adelaide. The delicious catering was provided by Cargo Catering and warm refreshments by B3 Coffee - both who have been with us since 2019.

I think we're starting to find our stride with organising the event. Setup on Saturday morning went smoothly and no major dramas to worry about was good. The only thing beyond our control was the weather. It rained most of the day but at least the 3 lecture theatres and the atrium (where sponsors and food and drinks were located) were all relatively close together, so it didn't put a damper on things 😃

One new thing this year that we're trialling is recording some of the presentations. We've partnered with TxRx Technologies on this and hope to be able to publish some of the sessions in the coming weeks.

Geoffrey Huntley was our keynote speaker. I particularly liked the fact that he came dressed exactly how he appeared in his promo image that we'd used before the conference.

Being one of the organisers, you don't always get a chance to sit in all the sessions, but with this year running smoothly I was able to relax a bit and enjoy some really interesting presentations.

Geoffrey Huntley's keynote

Morning tea and lots of discussions happening

I was then acting as room host for a couple of sessions, including James Bannan with a really interesting talk about the history of Steganography

And Ashley Mannix on Industrial strength testing for complex software

Then lunch! I'm not a vegetarian, but I picked that option as there were some spare ones, and it was really nice.

A few more sessions after lunch and then it was time for afternoon tea, and wow that was so yummy.

Last session I was back room hosting, and caught Samira talking about the challenges of introducing event-driven architecture.

The day finished with Andrew Best and myself hosting the closing prize draws and thank-yous. Another change we introduced this year was that to be eligible for the prizes you had to have submitted some feedback. Turns out that's a great incentive for people to give feedback!

Two bonus highlights for me for the day that I wanted to mention:

Catching up with Nigel Spencer who I worked with way back in 2010 and who is now based in the USA. He timed a trip back to Adelaide to visit family perfectly - or was it a visit to DDD Adelaide and a bit of family catch up on the side? 😃 Random fact: Nigel was a speaker at one of the original CodeCampSA events many years ago that were the predecessor of what is now 'DDD Adelaide'.

Meeting Melissa Houghton in person for the first time. I've known Melissa for a few years but this is the first time we've been in the same place at the same time. She's been involved with organising DDD Melbourne and now DDD Perth, so it was a lovely surprise to discover she'd 'popped' over from Perth to checkout the Adelaide event.

In the next few weeks the organising team will first (and most importantly!) catch our breath, then catch up to review all the feedback that has been submitted and do our final debrief. And then in the new year we'll start planning towards DDD Adelaide 2026!

Thanks to the awesome organising team Andrew, Claire, Harnoor, Isaac, Ryan and Will. What a great team to serve with planning and putting this event on together.

Extra special thanks to my family for stepping up to volunteer on the day. It's a very early start and a long day but they were wonderful.

A report from DDD Melbourne 2025, including the talks, venue, and what stood out.

I last attended DDD Melbourne 9 years ago, back in 2016. In the intervening time, it has grown roughly twice the size and shifted from a uni campus to the Melbourne Town Hall. As such, I was really pleased to be able to combine a work trip to Melbourne with being able to attend DDD Melbourne 2025 this last Saturday.

It was actually seeing what Melbourne had achieved back in 2015/2016 that inspired me to want to reboot DDD in Adelaide, and a few years later we did that with DDD Adelaide. Ironically, I learned a while ago that the original CodeCampSA/DDD Adelaide events were actually the inspiration for some of the other states to run their own events (figuring if Adelaide could do it, then they should too!). Now the inspiration flows back the other way😀

For the first time in quite a while I was not speaking or volunteering, so this was a real chance just to enjoy the day, learn some new things, meet a bunch of people, and maybe pick up some ideas to take back to DDD Adelaide.

The day kicked off with a keynote from Dr Sue Keay, who is Founder and Chair of Robotics Australia Group and an Adjunct Professor at QUT Centre for Robotics (to name just a couple of her roles). She gave a thought provoking talk about how robots are being used today and what the future might hold.

After morning tea..

I caught Tracy Bongiorno presenting "Beyond Continuous Delivery - Our journey from Gitflow to Continuous Deployment"

Then saw Bryden Oliver's "Top Database Performance Techniques". There were a couple of his tips that seemed a bit unusual to me. It would have been good if he'd pulled up some query plans to show what was going on for those.

Then just a bit of time for Swapnil Ogale to deliver "The Lost Art of good README documentation". Some nice tips and an encouragement to spend that time to make sure READMEs are useful.

Over the lunch break I took the opportunity to check out the community room. As well as sponsor desks they'd allocated some space for a few groups to promote themselves.

After the lunch break, I saw Lachlan Barclay deliver a fast-paced talk on "Performance, Profiling and Optimisation". It was great to catch up with Lachlan again.

Then staying in the same room for Michael Crook with "Unlocking Hidden Efficiency: Seamless Solutions with TDD You Didn't Know You Needed". I'm guessing Michael is new to presenting, but the content he covered was very interesting and left me with some homework to follow up on (in addition to learning about https://sli.dev/ which he used to create really nice slides with animated code samples)

Time for afternoon tea, then Kirsty McDonald with "Dungeons and...Developers? Building skills in tech teams with table top role playing games". I really liked the idea of using role-playing games to effectively fire-drill scenarios (but with made up characters). This was a fun talk and a great last regular session of the day.

The locknote was Aaron Powell, with a trip down memory lane of how we developed web sites 20 years ago, back in 2005. It brought back a lot of memories for me. Though I was talking to a new graduate at the after party later and she didn't really get a lot of the things people were laughing at.

It was then time to wrap up the conference with Bron Thulke, Lars Klint (the man of many colourful suits) and the team of volunteers who made the day run smoothly.

With the conference done it was off to the after-party for a few hours to catch up with everyone over a lemon squash (well I had lemon squash - not sure what everyone else was drinking!).

There's definitely some logistical challenges that Melbourne has with running such a large event compared to what we do in Adelaide. It's also interesting to see first hand how DDD runs in a commercial conference venue.

Well done DDD Melbourne, you put on a great day. As someone who has a good idea what goes into doing that, I really appreciate all you did (both seen and unseen).

A trip report from speaking at DDD Brisbane 2024 and reflections on the event.

Well this was an early Christmas present. I had submitted a talk for DDD Brisbane earlier this year, and it got voted in! So my work (SixPivot) kindly flew me up to Brisbane for the weekend. I'd never been to DDD Brisbane before, so I was really looking forward to being there.

It was only two weeks ago that we ran DDD Adelaide, but it's quite a different experience being an organiser compared to just being an attendee. Chris Gilbert (one of the DDD Brisbane organisers) also works at SixPivot so when I knew I'd be going I mentioned to him I'd be happy to help out on the day. So as well as speaking I was also a DDD Brisbane volunteer (complete with a bright red t-shirt!). It was a great way to support the event, as well as giving me an inside perspective on how the Brisbane team do DDD and hopefully be able to bring home some new ideas for Adelaide.

I stayed at the Vine Apartments, which is conveniently a short walk from Brisbane State High School (where DDD Brisbane is held). Just before 7am Saturday morning, Bronwen Zande (the other DDD Brisbane 2024 organiser) and John O'Brien (who was also the DDD Brisbane photographer) picked me up on their way through, and we began setting up.

A bunch of other volunteers quickly appeared and a very organised preparation began. They have obviously done this before as they knew what needed to be done, and what needed to go where.

Around 8am registrations began. It's a similar process to Adelaide, with attendees being 'checked in' via an app, and then given lanyards and really nifty bags (made by Boomerang Bags).

The keynote speaker was Joel Pobar. I remember seeing him speak at a few Microsoft TechEd conferences many years ago, so it was interesting to hear what he's been up to since those days. He now works for Anthropic, and his talk on AI was a) pretty deep, with a few maths equations that were a bit over my head and b) left me feeling a bit uneasy about the future as he shared his own concerns about where things might be heading. A personal quibble, I would have preferred he kept his language G rated. That was a distraction I didn't think was necessary.

Then I was off to act as host for the 'PAC 2' session room (they ran 4 breakout sessions in parallel for most of the day).

I heard Daniel Fang present "LEGO + Python + GPT = The Journey from Dad to Superdad with OpenAI and Robotics!"

A short break for morning tea with fresh fruit and some nice biscuits.

Then Jason Taylor with "Practical Clean Architecture with ASP.NET Core 9". I hope we can get Jason down to Adelaide to speak at Adelaide .NET User Group sometime.

Followed by Stephen Rees-Carter with "Th1nk Lik3 a H4cker". This was really interesting hands-on session with the audience invited to try and hack along with Stephen.

Lunch was served outside. Roast beef, chicken, and hot vegetables - yum.

I handed over my room hosting duties for PAC 2 to my SixPivot colleague Dylan (who was also volunteering for the day), so I was now free to check out some sessions in different rooms for the afternoon (apart from when it was time for me to present back in PAC 2).

I caught a bit of Bryden Oliver & Luke Parker presenting "Feel the Mayhem - When Deployments go Wrong". This was less about the technical details of failed deployments (which I've previously done talks on myself) and more about the "people and process" part of recovering from an incident.

I left a few minutes early (to get back to the PAC 2 room to start preparing for my presentation) and caught the end of Aaron Powell's "I've burnt out, now what".

Then it was my turn to present "10 tips and tricks for GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps".

I'd previously presented this talk at Adelaide .NET User Group a few months ago and it went over an hour. I knew I only had 45 minutes at DDD, so when I did a test run for my work colleagues earlier this week I tried to tighten it up, but over compensated by finishing it in about 25 minutes! A few more practice runs helped to find the middle ground, such that on the day I finished right about the 40 minute mark, giving 5 minutes for a few questions at the end. I also was able to give out a couple of pairs of DDD Adelaide socks.

After a spot of afternoon tea (actually I was chatting to people so much it was all gone by the time I realised!), it was off the last session of the day - Joe Patterson with "Simplicity Driven Design".

DDD Brisbane have a locknote to finish off the day. This year it was Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen OAM. I have not met her before, but I do have an interesting connection. A number of years ago Bronwen Zande was promoting the Tech Girls are Superheroes books (written by Dr Beekhuyzen) on Twitter and I was able to get a copy for my eldest daughter.

Sometime later, I'd arranged for Bronwen to speak to the Adelaide .NET User Group and while she was visiting I also arranged for her to visit the high school my kids attended and she gave a talk about her experience as a software developer (and more excitingly for the students) working with Microsoft's HoloLens.

So now it was great to hear Dr Beekhuyzen in person. Bronwen had asked me a few weeks ago if I might ask my daughter if she had any thoughts on the impact reading the book and having relevant role models might have had.

Near the end of Jenine's talk, Bronwen invited me up on stage to share her thoughts. I was able to thank both Jenine and Bronwen for their positive influence and read out the following quote from my daughter:

It was encouraging to read stories about women in tech at a young age when I was making decisions about what I wanted to do in the future

After the prize draw (which cleverly required that you had submitted feedback at least once to be eligible to win, as well as be present in the room), there were thank yous and a closing farewell, and also an intriguing hint of a possible 'DDD Outback 2025' satellite event.

Then it was time to pack down (which again didn't take too long with the volunteers all pitching in), and a final farewell to my DDD Brisbane friends.

It was such a privilege to be able to attend and I can't thank enough the organisers, volunteers and also the sponsors for all they've done to put on another successful event. I hope I get an opportunity to visit again in the future.

Last Saturday we ran DDD Adelaide 2024 - Adelaide's largest community run conference for the tech community. Around 350 software developers and folks from related disciplines gathered at the University of Adelaide for a day of great speakers, food, coffee and conversations.

This follows on from the 2023 conference, so you'd think it would be all routine now. But there were a few organisational challenges on the morning. Thankfully, most attendees would have been blissfully unaware, other than we had a last minute room change. While the new room was a little further away, we did hear back that the room itself had great atmosphere.

Again, Cargo Catering and B3 Coffee did an awesome job keeping everyone fed and watered throughout the day. Because we increased the size of the event we switched to 'lunch bowls' for lunch, and they worked really well (with no big queues of people waiting ages compared to last year).

By the end of the day, I was starting to finally relax and enjoy the last session (Tony Albrecht on human biases in programming - excellent!) and then wrap up the day with a bit of fun with Andrew Best, thanking all those who helped make the day happen, and the all important prize draw.

This coming weekend I'll be attending our sister event DDD Brisbane for the first time. I'll be giving my 10 tips and tricks for GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps talk, and also helping out on the day as a volunteer. I'm really looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues, as well as observing how Brisbane run their event. Maybe I'll see you there?

Notes and photos from attending the 2024 Microsoft MVP Summit in Redmond.

I'm back in Redmond for the 2024 Microsoft MVP Summit! I was last here in 2019 and was all booked to return in 2020, but something significant happened around that time that you might be aware of. The event pivoted to virtual in 2020, but since last year has resumed allowing in-person attendance too. I was a virtual participant last year, but this year I've made the big trip over the pond.

I flew to Seattle via Sydney and San Francisco. It is a long way to come, and I didn't sleep very much (hard to get comfortable, plus we had quite a bit of turbulence), though I did end up in a row all to myself (so at least I could stretch out a bit!)

Narelle kindly lent me her Sony WH1000XM4 noise-cancelling headphones for the trip, and they were brilliant. Air travel can be quite noisy, and they did a great job reducing the background noise and were comfortable to wear for extended periods. Do not fear, I will return them when I get home though!

One hiccup on the trip apparently happened while I was recharging my phone at the San Francisco airport while waiting for my connecting flight. The boarding gate opened and I grabbed my phone and charger and jumped in line. It was only later after I'd landed in Seattle and unpacked at the hotel that I discovered that my US to Australian power adapter was missing. It must still be sitting in that power point back in the San Francisco airport lounge. I put a call for help out to my fellow MVPs and not only got offers of spare adapters (huge thanks to Aussie MVP Benjamin Elias), but also some suggestions as to where I might buy a replacement (The Container Store at Bellevue had this adapter, though it is quite a bit more expensive than the $AU6.50 you'd pay for one from Bunnings). Lesson learned: Next time I travel, I'll pack some spare adapters!

I'm staying at The Residence Inn Seattle Bellevue. It's really close to the Microsoft campus at Redmond (a nice walk for me when weather permits, and Seattle does have a reputation for inclement weather). Rather than a big multistory hotel, the rooms here are in one of 15 cute houses. Your space is self-contained with cooking facilities included. In previous years I stayed in downtown Bellevue (right near all the shops and services), but I like the change.

Today (Monday) there were some pre-summit sessions on AI (they weren't under NDA so I can tell you that!), but tomorrow the summit proper begins and by default, all content will be private.

I'm looking forward to learning a heap, catching up with MVP friends and making new connections.

A big thanks to SixPivot for supporting my attendance at the MVP Summit this year.

I'll start the homeward journey on Friday evening. As nice as it is to be here, it will be good to get home again too.

Recaps DDD Adelaide 2023, from the day’s logistics to the outcomes of running a community-led software conference.

On Saturday we ran DDD Adelaide 2023 - a community-run conference for the software developer community. The preparations and planning for this had begun much earlier in the year, and now everyone could enjoy the fruits of all our work. It was a very early start (7am), arriving at the University of Adelaide to set up with my fellow organising team and volunteers (including my wife and my two daughters). Doors opened at 8am (and continued to be re-opened all day due to the uni's weekend security policy!) and people started rolling in.

Cargo Catering and B3 Coffee did such a great job in 2019, so it was great to have them back again. One significant change was to move to a larger venue, so we could increase the number of tickets (about 100 more than 2019).

The vibe was really positive all throughout the day, and the weather didn't disappoint either. Aaron Powell's keynote of how getting involved with DDD conferences impacted his career kicked it all off. Then the 3 tracks of speakers ran for the rest of the day, with breaks for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

A short wrap up at the end of the day provided the perfect opportunity to thank everyone involved, draw prizes and then some attendees continued the conversations and socialising at a nearby pub.

Of course my Akubra hat made a return too, adorned with DDD stickers 😊.

I'm particularly grateful for all the volunteers (and especially my family) for working tirelessly all day to make sure everything ran smoothly. Also, it was so nice to have some of my SixPivot colleagues (from Adelaide and interstate) attend and present.

It's a good chance for the organising team to take a short break before we start planning for next year. If you can't wait until then, do check out DDD Brisbane (coming up on 2nd December) and DDD Melbourne (16th March 2024).

Announces the return of DDD Adelaide for 2023 and outlines what attendees and speakers can expect from the community event.

Back in 2019, Andrew and I ran the first 'rebooted' DDD Adelaide conference. The response from the Adelaide developer community was amazing, and we were all set to run again in 2020. For some reason, we had to put plans on hold for a few years, but I'm excited to announce that we are back for 2023!

It's awesome to have Claire Webber, Harnoor Bandesh, Isaac Mann and Will Turner join the organising team. Check out Isaac's post about why he got involved.

Tickets are on sale now, but numbers are limited, so get in quick!

If you are interested in speaking, we are now accepting talk proposals. We are looking for a diverse range of speakers and topics. You don't need to be an expert speaker, we are happy to help you prepare your talk.

Finally, an event like this doesn't happen without sponsors. We strive to keep the ticket price low so that it won't be a barrier for anyone to attend. But there are a surprising number of expenses involved in running the event, and income from tickets doesn't come close to covering the costs. That's why we need sponsors, so if you work for a company that would like to support the Adelaide developer community, please get in touch.

Call to action

Buy your ticket to attend

Submit a talk proposal

Sponsor the event

I just found out that my talk 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger Builds' has been accepted for Developer! Developer! Developer! Day in the United Kingdom on Saturday 12th December. I won't be flying to the other side of the world, but rather this year the UK's premier free developer conference is being run virtually.

Given the time zone difference, I'll be staying up into the early hours of Sunday morning to present my talk (12.30am my time, so manageable).

They're running 7 tracks of content, and given it's virtual then everyone is invited to register and attend.

See you there!
